The rules for traveling to France vary depending on the country from which you are traveling, which are color-coded and available here. The United States is currently a “red list” country, with the following admission criteria.

Fully vaccinated travelers from the United States aged 18 and up may enter the country by presenting proof of vaccination, the results of a negative COVID-19 test (PCR or antigen) taken within 48 hours prior to departure for France, and a sworn statement attesting they do not have COVID-19 symptoms or have had contact with any confirmed COVID-19 cases.

Proof of immunization that is acceptable

Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca, and Johnson & Johnson are among the companies whose vaccines have been approved by the World Health Organization and the European Medicines Agency. Those who have received a complete dosage of a WHO-licensed vaccine that has not been approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) must get a single dose of an EMA-approved mRNA vaccine from Pfizer or Moderna.

Travelers are considered fully vaccinated 28 days after receiving one dose of a single-dose vaccine, seven days after receiving two doses of a two-dose vaccine, or seven days after receiving an additional dose of an EMA-approved mRNA vaccine if they received a WHO-licensed vaccine that was not approved by the EMA.

The card given by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is considered “adequate proof of immunization for entrance,” according to the US Embassy in France.

Travelers who have not been vaccinated must meet certain standards in order to enter the country

Unvaccinated and partially vaccinated visitors, including students and those transiting France for less than 24 hours, can currently only enter France provided they have a “compelling reason for travel.” The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs has a comprehensive list of pressing reasons for travel to and from “red” nations, but note that the bulk of exclusions do not apply to Americans.

Unvaccinated Americans who have been approved for entry must have a negative COVID-19 test (PCR or antigen) within 48 hours of departure and will be tested again upon arrival. They must quarantine for ten days before doing another test. Unvaccinated tourists must fill out a screening form prior to travel.

Children’s rules

Travelers aged 12 and up must undergo testing, vaccination, and booster shots, and American visitors must produce proof of a negative PCR or antigen test within 48 hours of entering the country.

“Travelers under the age of 11 are treated as vaccinated regardless of their vaccination status, and a COVID test is not required.” The embassy states that “travelers aged 11 to 17 are treated as vaccinated if accompanied by a fully vaccinated parent or guardian.”

“Travelers in this age range who are traveling alone must follow the restrictions that apply to adult travelers.”
