Right to rent scheme: Individuals with British or Irish passports will lose their entitlement to rent checks as of April 6, 2022. Employers and landlords will be able to review papers to meet their right to rent checks using Identity Service Providers (IDSPs).
Individuals will be able to upload images of their personal documents that are required for these checks using the Identity Service Providers system. The system will next check the person’s identification and eligibility to rent (and work) in the United Kingdom. This eliminates the need for employers or landlords to physically inspect original documents, allowing for a more standard system in which all documents are validated in the same manner.
The Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) is collaborating with the Department for Digital, Culture, Media, and Sport to create a legal framework that will ensure that checks are carried out with greater security.
We also want to remind you that, as of April 6, 2022, landlords will no longer be able to use a physical BRP, BRC, or FWP as legitimate proof of a right to rent a property in the UK, regardless of whether the card has a later expiry date.
