Belarus has said that airlines from the EU and the UK will face retaliatory measures.

Minsk also declared that it will impose a restriction on the import of certain items from countries that had imposed sanctions on Belarus.

The action comes after the EU, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada imposed sanctions on dozens of Belarusian officials and organizations at the same time.

The EU went after travel businesses, notably state-owned Belavia, for allegedly facilitating increased illegal migration into the EU.

Travel bans and asset freezes were also issued by the EU on 17 additional Belarusians, including top border guards and military officers, government officials, and judges.

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has been accused by Brussels of waging a “hybrid war” by pushing migrants to enter the EU in order to destabilize the West.

Belarus has refuted the charges, accusing the EU of failing to secure the refugees’ safe transit.

The current sanctions, according to the Belarusian Foreign Ministry, are “illegal” and “aimed at undermining Belarusian sovereignty and deteriorating the well-being of Belarusian citizens.”

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko stated on Monday that the sanctions will have no effect.
